Future of nuclear energy.

Detailed program of the subject:

Energy and matter.  Atomic structure and bounding forces. Basic knowledge in nuclear energy production, fission and fusion. NPP types, PWR, BWR, Candu, RBMK, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation types, VVER-440, VVER-1200, primary and secondary water chemistry, fission products, TRU nuclides, activation and corrosion products, nuclear fuel cycles, mining, fuel element production, isotope enrichment, decommissioning, nuclear safety and proliferation. Types of radiations, alpha, beta gamma, neutron radiations. Detectors and nuclear measurements. gas-filled detectors, scintillation and semiconductor detectors nuclear detector electronics, counting and data evaluation, alpha- and gamma-spectrometry analysis methods, NAA, isotope dilution Environmental radioactivity, natural and artificial radioactivity, radioactivity in soil, water, air, construction materials, food, body etc. Dosimetry and radiation protection. absorbed, equivalent and effective doses Nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel cycles. Radioactive wastes, waste treatments. Future of nuclear energy.

Method of education:

lecture slides, animations, student reports, laboratory practices

Requirements of accomplishment of the subject:

  1. a)      In the semester: 75% presence
  2. In the examination period: succesfull exam
  3. Successfully finish laboratory practices
